My
father, Glenn Gilmore, opened Gilmore Music in 1944 at 1935 E.
7TH St., Long Beach, California and it remains in the same location
today. He opened the store based on music instrument repair and Gilmore’s
Music School. He was able to attract highly qualified instructors
for every class of instrument played. Glenn was self-taught in the
art of repair and quickly became sought after by professionals and
school districts in Southern California, for all repairs of their
instruments. Eventually Gilmore Music expanded into retail sales of
all varieties of instruments played in orchestra, concert band and
jazz.
Today Gilmore’s offers the services listed above and has added:
electronic repair of keyboards, amplifiers, electric guitar and bass,
which is staffed with highly trained personnel. Ethnic instruments
from all parts of the world have also been added to the wide range
of instruments in stock. You can view them on our Ethnic Instruments
page. We are also open 7 days a week to make it easier for our customers
to make use of these services. Our music school has begun group classes
as well as private music lessons. We also provide individualized lessons
for students with special needs. Just go to our contact page for our
phone # and e-mail address or our lessons page to contact a teacher
of interest. Finally we proudly announce the opening of OPEN MIC NIGHT
on the last Saturday of each month. This will give all aspiring musicians
a stage to perform for a live audience.

As
the second generation proprietor operating the store, I have seen many
changes that have taken place since the inception of the store. This
has included the introduction of different genres of music, most prominently
Rock‘n’Roll. This introduced the electric guitar and bass
to the instrument family. These types of instruments have dominated
sales in our store for the last 47 years. The Beatles and Rolling Stones
influenced the youth and young adults who came to Gilmore Music for
Vox and Fender electric instruments. It was so cool to actually stock
the same instruments that these super groups used. In addition the square
footage of the store increased greatly with the addition of a larger
showroom, warehouse, and recording studio.
Gilmore Music has
served the surrounding community and will continue to do so for the
life of the store. We thank our faithful customers for their patronage
over the years and into the future.
